Fungal Resources
Let's myceliate! The mycology community is thriving at every scale from the local to the global. We’ve compiled a growing list of resources including people and fungi, organizations and projects, books, papers and growing fungi.
Fungal Literature Sampler
The scientific literature on fungi and fungal biotechnology is rich and growing quickly. Open Fung has put together and summarized a sampler of papers on general views of fungi and how people can work with fungi to solve problems, with specifics on mycelium materials and Ganoderma fungi useful for mycomaterials. The bibliography is far from exhaustive, but offers points of entry to key ideas and lines of research to follow farther.
building with mycelium Composites: Strategies for aquafung and material design
by Sam Shoemaker
Sam Shoemaker’s 94-page compendium is now available to download for free on his website. It contains everything he wish had known when he started this research in 2015. From strain selection to preservation, this is the step by step guide you can use to build a mushroom boat or composites with living mushroom mycelium for both new and experienced cultivators. While there’s a wealth of books and open-source information on cultivating gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, there's very little on working with mycelium composites. This is his solution! He completed and published this compendium as part of his Mushroom Boat solo exhibition at Fulcrum Arts in Pasadena, California, which is on view from October 10, 2025 – January 17, 2026.
